What is .vanss?

.vanss is a file extension used by a variant of Dharma Ransomware (also referred to as the .vanss virus). This variant of Dharma ransomware uses an encryption algorithm to encrypt files on a computer in order to restrict user access to them. When this happens it changes the file extension of the files it encrypts to .vanss. The ransomware will then download two files that act as a ransom note named Info.hta and FILES ENCRYPTED.txt.

As you can see in the image, this variant of ransomware displays a message to explain what happened to the files on the computer and how to recover the files it encrypted. In this case, the malware author wants you to write an email to Blacklist@cock.li with your ID in the title of the message. The instructions insist that you buy Bitcoins and send them a payment in order to have your files recovered. The ransom note claims that you have 24 hours to do this and that the price depends on how fast you write to them.

Here’s a small sample of what is written on the ransom note:

All your files have been encrypted!
All your files have been encrypted due to a security problem with your PC. If you want to restore them, write us to the email Blacklist@cock.li
Write this ID in the title of your message [removed]
In case of no answer in 24 hours write us to these emails: Blacklist@cock.li
You have to pay for decryption in Bitcoins. The price depends on how fast you write to us. After payment we will send you the decryption tool that will decrypt all your files.

It should be advised that paying a ransom or contacted the people behind the ransomware will not guarantee that you will recover your files or that the infection is removed and will not appear again in the future.
