Fake PayPal Receipt email Scams

Be on the alert for fake emails posing as PayPal from sender: service@paypal.com (lad98@netinformatica.net, and others) with a subject line similar to Receipt for your PayPal payment to Luiz Mariotto. These fake PayPal receipt emails are a sent by cyber criminals, not PayPal, and clicking links contained in the fake PayPal receipt email may install malware to the computer system, in particular spyware used in severe forms of cyber crime such as credit theft, extortion, and identity theft.

This email scam uses social engineering by manufacturing a very accurate and legitimate appearing fake PayPal email receipt, in order to persuade victims into believing that their PayPal account was used to make a payment. Victims often believe their PayPal account was used without their consent and may click a link provided in the email to check their accounts.

Instead, if you received an unsolicited email from PayPal claiming to be a receipt for your PayPal payment, ignore it, do not click any links, and visit PayPal.com directly to check your account.

  • If you receive the fake email delete it immediately. As a safety precaution prior to analyzing your PayPal account for discrepancies via PayPal.com, it is suggested (but not necessary  to scan your computer for additional malware including spyware and Trojans that utilize techniques to collect inputted data, such as your PayPal username and password.
  • If you accidentally clicked a link in the fake PayPal receipt email, your computer may be compromised.It is recommended (and necessary) to scan your computer for undetected malware that may be affecting your computer system with reputable software.
