Fake HP Digital Device email scam warning

One of the latest email scams is the HP Scan scam, otherwise known as the HP Digital Device, fake HP email, and HP Digital Sending device scam. The HP Scan scam is a fake email sent from a fraudulent email address usually associated or linked to the recipient’s email address, such as fakename@yourdomain.com, HP_Printer@yourdomain.com, HP_Printer@gmail.com and others masked as HP Digital Device or HP Support. The fake HP Scan email engages in social engineering by pretending to be a legitimate source, in this case Hewlett Packard, or the Hewlett Packard Digital Sending services, and attempts to persuade victims to download an attached file such as a zip file titled HP_Scan_06292013_398.zip, in order to infect the victims computer with dangerous computer viruses and malware.

The Hewlett Packard email scam (HP email spam) sends victims an email with content that targets HP users and non Hewlett Packard computer users. The attached file primary holds malicious payloads and viewing or downloading the attached file will infect a computer with malware. The content of the HP email spam has been detailed below. Please note, emails sent on behalf of HP without their consent or knowledge may vary in senders, subject line, and content. *This email scam is in no way associated with Hewlett Packard. The emails are not sent from Hewlett Packard.

Below is an example of the fake HP Scan email. The subject line may be titled “Scanned Copy” and the sender may be from HP Digital Device. If you received an email from a similar sender as HP Digital Device, DO NOT OPEN THE EMAIL. IGNORE THE EMAIL.

How to deal with the HP Digital Device scam

If you have fallen victim to the HP Digital Device scam, it is strongly recommended to scan your computer for dangerous malware using reputable software and remove the infection if necessary. If you downloaded the malicious file or clicked a malicious link contained in the fake HP Digital Device email, please use the instructions below to eradicate malware from your computer.

1. Install the free or paid version of Malwarebytes Anti-Malware software.

2. Once Malwarebytes is installed, run the program. If you are using the free version of Malwarebytes you will be prompted to update the database, please do so.

3. Open the first tab labeled “Scanner” and select the Perform full scan option. Click the Scan button to perform a full system scan. Malwarebytes will automatically detect malware infecting your computer system brought on by the fake HP email.

4. Once the full system scan is complete, Malwarebytes may prompt a message stating malicious objects were detected. Select the malicious objects and click the Remove Selected button to completely remove the malicious files from your computer (the image below shows a file that is NOT selected).
