What is GandCrab v5 and how do I remove it?
GandCrab v5
Learn what GandCrab v5 ransomware is and how to remove the computer virus from your computer and decrypt or recover personal files.
What is GandCrab v5?
GandCrab v5 is a variant of GandCrab ransomware that includes GandCrab 5.0.1, GandCrab 5.0.2, GandCrab 5.0.3, GandCrab 5.0.4, and others. The new versions of GandCrab ransomware encrypts files on a computer using military grade encryption algorithms and appends a new 5 or 10 character file extension to the end of the filenames of the files it encrypts. The virus then drops a HTML ransom note on the desktop and every drive’s root folder.
The ransomware employs a HTML file that contains a ransom note to detail what happened to the files on the machine and how to make a ransom payment to allegedly decrypt the files (the way the malware author wants you to). It should be noted that paying the ransom will not guarantee that you will recover your files or that the infection is removed and will not appear again in the future.
The difference between past variants of GandCrab v5 ransomware is that it has now started to use the recently disclosed Task Scheduler ALPC vulnerability to gain System privileges on a computer it infects. The vulnerability has been patched by Microsoft in September 2018 but the virus can still attack computers currently vulnerable to EternalBlue and business that are slow to install updates.
Other differences are manufactured once new versions of the ransomware is released; usually bug fixes and changes to file extension or entry process.
