Snapchat Launches Free My AI Chatbot, Powered by ChatGPT
Snapchat has recently made a significant announcement that has the potential to impact the AI community and make artificial intelligence more mainstream. The company has opened up its customizable My AI chatbot, which is powered by the viral AI chatbot ChatGPT, to all users within the app. Previously, this feature was only available to paying Snapchat+ subscribers, but now it is free for all to use.
While there were concerns about whether this move was a temporary marketing practice designed to encourage users to subscribe to Snapchat+, ChatGPT tells us that there have been no reports of users being required to pay for a subscription to use the feature and that Snapchat’s decision to make the My AI chatbot more widely available could be seen as a response to the growing demand for AI-powered chatbots that can offer personalized and responsive interactions with users. This move is likely to be welcomed by many users who can now experience the benefits of AI chatbots without any additional cost.
Although this may be true, we still had to pay for a subscription to gain the ability to access and enable the My AI feature.
Snap states that My AI chatbot can provide recommendations, answer questions, assist with making plans, and even write a haiku within seconds. To enhance user experience, it is also customizable, allowing users to give it a name and design a custom Bitmoji avatar.
This announcement comes after OpenAI, the creators of ChatGPT, opened up access to its chatbot to third-party businesses more than a month ago. Snap, Instacart, and Quizlet were among the first partners to experiment with adding ChatGPT.
Since its public release in November 2022, ChatGPT has amazed many users with its impressive ability to generate original essays, stories, and song lyrics in response to user prompts. This has spurred an “arms race” among tech companies to develop and deploy similar AI tools in their products.
However, incorporating ChatGPT features also carries risks. As the tool is trained on vast amounts of data online, it has the potential to spread inaccurate information and respond in ways that could be inappropriate or offensive to users.
Snap has acknowledged that My AI chatbot is not perfect but has made significant progress in ensuring it conforms to community guidelines. The company has made changes to protect users against inappropriate or harmful responses, including adding moderation technology and integrating the feature into its in-app parental tools.
It remains to be seen how users will respond to the ChatGPT-powered My AI chatbot and how useful AI chatbots can be in our everyday lives. Nevertheless, this move by Snapchat, along with other companies experimenting with ChatGPT, will likely push the boundaries of what is possible with AI chatbots and their potential role in customer service and other uses across our favorite apps.
