How to remove WOT (Virus Removal Guide)

WOT virus (Web of Trust)

The WOT virus (Web of Trust virus) is a term used to identify a potentially unwanted program (PUP) and potential malware found in the scareware and spyware categories of computer infections. While Web of Trusts’s WOT add-on and extension is not technically a computer virus, this application shares the same exact permissions that known adware, spyware, browser hijackers, and other programs possess.

WOT virus

WOT is allegedly free a tool for popular internet browsers including Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Internet Explorer that claims to help you find trustworthy websites based on millions of users’ experiences; However, many people have found the internet browser attachment to be misleading, slanderous, and malicious.

WOT will not protect or block users from malicious websites and will instead block access or restrict access to legitimate websites. An example of this is the conduit.com mywot.com scorecard. Most Antivirus and Anti-Malware products will detect software related to conduit.com as malware in the browser hijacker category. Most users have left reviews on the mywot.com website stating that “Conduit engine will change your homepage and add URL search hooks to your registry, causing you to inadvertently land on pages that you didn’t even search for.”

Most user reviews for conduit.com are “i do not trust” reviews, which would mean that WOT should block this potentially malicious website based off their alleged business model, but fact stands that they do not. This can put many WOT users at risk of infection.

Web of Trust and their community have known to attack legitimate businesses, websites, and website owners without reasonable cause. If a website owner is to ask for help, mywot.com support will offer no such assistance. This means that WOT knowingly defames legitimate businesses by throwing their user-base under the bus in order to scare internet users away.

Throughout the internet there are thousands of cases in which WOT and the mywot.com community have tarnished reputable businesses. It seems that sometimes it is done out of pleasure, while other times it is done for commercial competition.

On December 7, 2010, ten companies all associated to Ayman El-Difrawi aka Alec Difrawi filed a lawsuit in Florida against WOT Services for defamation, violating rights, conspiracy and manipulating algorithms, among other claims, demanding WOT to remove ratings and comments for their numerous websites.

WOT malware

The WOT add-on and extension shares the same permissions as known malware. WOT can access your data on all websites and access your tabs and browsing activity. This is similar to adware and spyware applications such as Highlightly.
