What is KeepVid Pro?

KeepVid Pro by KeepVid Studio is a combination Windows program and browser object that is promoted as a free tool to help you download online videos from various websites such as YouTube, DailyMotion, and Flow Player. Although the KeepVid Pro program might sound like a useful and safe tool to use it is actually recognized as a potentially dangerous and malicious program by reputable vendors and entities such as Google. The Google Chrome browser will actually stop you from downloading the executable file used to install KeepVid Pro. In order to download the executable file in Google Chrome you will have to manually accept the file after a warning from the browser.

According to VirusTotal.com the executable file used to install the program named keepvid-pro-desktop_setup_full2957.exe (or other) is detected as malicious by an Antivirus program. The detection name for the file is suspected of Trojan.Downloader.gen.h. Earlier versions of the executable file have a larger detection ratio and multiple Antivirus engines will detect it.

Once the KeepVid Pro program is installed it will place an icon on Windows desktop, create and schedule new tasks to run every time you start Windows, and download another program without your consent. The program that it will download is usually Aimersoft Helper Compact by Aimersoft (or another similar program). It is used to install browser helper objects and other attachments to your internet browsers.

The KeepVid Pro program and browser extension is used to replace your existing internet browser settings and gather information about your browsing habits. Once the cooperating extension such as Tampermonkey is installed it has the possibility to change your homepage, the page you see when opening a new tab, and your search settings. This will cause your browser to launch and redirect to new websites when you open a new window, open a new tab, or search the web via the address bar.

The extension might also have permission to read and change all your data on the websites you visit in order to track your browsing activities.

Uninstall KeepVid Pro from Windows

1. Open Windows Start Menu and right click the program in the list of installed programs. Select Uninstall. (In Windows 7 and earlier go to Control Panel > Uninstall a Program. In Windows 8 right click the bottom left corner of the task bar and select Programs and Features).

2. At the Programs and Features window, find the KeepVid Pro program in the list of installed programs, click the program with your mouse, and click the Uninstall button that appears. *You can also double click the program in the list to begin the removal process.

Remove the KeepVid Pro extension

Google Chrome

1. Click the Customize and control Google Chrome icon and go to More tools > Extensions.

2. Click the trashcan icon next to the extension to remove it.

Mozilla Firefox

1. Open the Menu and click Add-ons.

2. Click Remove next to the add-on to remove it.

Microsoft Internet Explorer

1. Go to Tools (Alt+X) and click Manage add-ons.

2. Select the add-on with your mouse and click Remove.

Apple Safari

1. Go to Safari > Preferences > Extensions.

2.  Click the Uninstall button next to the extension to remove it.

Remove malware from your computer with Malwarebytes

1. Open your browser window and download Malwarebytes 3.0 Premium or Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free.

2. Double click the executable file (mb3-setup.exe or other) to begin installing Malwarebytes.

3. In some versions of the installation file you can simply select your language and click Next to install the program; Otherwise, select your language, click Next, then select “I accept the agreement,” click the Next button several times, and then click the Install button to install Malwarebytes. Click Finish once the install process is complete.

4. Open Malwarebytes and click the Scan Now button on the Dashboard to begin scanning your computer.

5. Click the Quarantine Selected button once the scan is finished.

6. If Malwarebytes says “All selected items have been removed successfully. A log file has been saved to the logs folder. Your computer needs to be restarted to complete the removal process. Would you like to restart now?” click the Yes button to restart your computer.
