How To Remove The Road Runner Toolbar Hijacker Virus (Search.rr.com, Rr.com)

What Is Road Runner Toolbar Malware?

The Road Runner toolbar is an extension for Mozilla Firefox (2+), Microsoft Internet Explorer (6-9), and Apple Safari (3 -5) powered by Conduit and Road Runner. The Road Runner Toolbar is distributed by Road Runner (rr.com) as freeware. Though rr.com seems to be a legitimate “news” based website powered by Time Warner unfortunately, the Road Runner toolbar is bundled with malware and viruses, in particular adware and spyware. The Road Runner virus is commonly referred to as a redirection virus and browser hijacker because of it’s capabilities to affect internet browser settings, such as managed search engines. When an infected user is redirected by Road Runner they are taken to search.rr.com (pictured below).

The Road Runner Toolbar claims to allow its users to search the web quickly, browse news faster, check mail quicker, personalize apps (malicious Conduit apps), and protect against malware using the McAfee extension. (Please note McAfee Site Advisor extension is malware itself, not related to the actual McAfee brand.) This information is true, the Road Runner Toolbar will obnoxiously assist in all which it claims,  but will also install adware and spyware to an infected system.

If the Road Runner toolbar is voluntaerly installed the user is given options to opt out their customized web search, homepage (rr.com), and community news alerts (pictured below).

Whilst the toolbar may be voluntary installed, this may not always be the case with Road Runner. Road Runner may have been contracted through other malware and Trojans. Road Runner is known to bundle with adware and spyware programs in order to track and trace computer users and their internet activity.

How To Remove The Road Runner Toolbar

1. Antivirus/Anti-Malware Software – Scan and remove malware.
2. Manual Removal – Manually remove Road Runner Toolbar per each infected internet browser.
3. System Restore – Restore your computer to a date and time before infection. For more information regarding a system restore please click here.

After removal is accomplished, if internet browser settings have been compromised, please proceed to the “Repair Internet Settings” options below the removal steps.

1. Antivirus/Anti-Malware Software

How to uninstall the Road Runner Toolbar from Internet Explorer browser

1. Open your computer’s Control Panel then select Add or Remove Programs.
2. Select Road Runner Toolbar from the list of installed Apps.
   
3. Click on the Change/Remove button.
4. You will be directed to their unnecessary feedback page, do not submit. Road Runner is attempting to install a cookie onto your system. 
5. Reboot your machine.

How to uninstall the Road Runner Toolbar from Mozilla Firefox

1. Open Firefox and click on the Tools menu. 
2. Select Add-ons.
3. Select Road Runner Toolbar from the list of installed Apps.
4. Click on the Uninstall button.

You will be directed to their unnecessary feedback page, do not submit. Road Runner is attempting to install a cookie onto your system.

How to uninstall the Road Runner Toolbar from Apple Safari

1. Open the Finder App and browse to Applications.
2. Click on Toolbars and then click on Road Runner.
3. Double-click on Uninstall.
4. Fill in the User name & Password and click the OK button.

How To Repair Internet Browser Settings (Optional)

How To Repair Internet Explorer Settings

1. Navigate to Tools > Internet Options

2. Remove http://www.rr.com and use default settings or your preferred URL (image below) and click Apply (Not OK… yet).

3. Next, click the “Settings” button to Change search defaults.

4. If you removed the Road Runner Toolbar file from your computer before, you will be able to remove the Road Runner Custom Web Search provider under the “Search Providers” tab… Remove Road Runner Custom Web Search by right clicking the title and selecting remove (do not close, yet).

5. Finally visit the “Toolbars and Extensions” tab and remove all Road Runner extensions under the publisher name Conduit LTD.
