How To Disable Alexa Toolbar And Uninstall Alexa Toolbar Extension
What is the Alexa Toolbar?
The Alexa Toolbar is a legitimate Toolbar add-on (browser helper object) developed by Alexa.com that displays helpful information about websites visited including their Alexa score (popularity on the internet based on traffic), provides a pop-up blocker, web search, and other custom features. You can even create your own Alexa Toolbar on Alexa.com.
The Alexa toolbar, while installed, stays resident in the background and collects general information about the user’s web browser and operating system such as addresses of visited websites and logs computer internet address. The information is utilized to rank website popularity and traffic to determine demographics and statistics of visited websites.
Is the Alexa Toolbar safe?
Yes! The Alexa Toolbar is not adware, spyware, nor do they share information with third parties. Personal information gathered by Alexa is on a voluntary basis before installation, such as gender, age, household income, ethnicity, education, children in household, and postal code.
The Alexa Toolbar does not install without consent and should only be installed from a familiar source such as Alexa.com. If you have issues regarding malware, including adware pop-ups and in-text advertisements while using the Alexa Toolbar, you may have installed a fake or scam version of the Alexa Toolbar from a malicious source or may have an unrelated computer infection.
The Alexa “Toolbar” version, opposed to the extension detailed below is only available for Microsoft Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox.
What is the Alexa Extension?
The Alexa Extension is an Alexa add-on for the Google Chrome browser. It is much different than the Alexa Toolbar for uses as it’s only purpose is to provide ready information about visited websites and links to their information on Alexa.com. Also note, there used to be an Alexa Toolbar for Google Chrome, but Google changed their development terms and no longer promotes the use of such third party Toolbars.
The Alexa Extension for Google Chrome stays resident but noticeable in the background and can be used to easily view the Alexa score of a visited website based on the size of the blue Alexa bar.
