How To Remove Text Enhance (Virus Removal Guide)

Text Enhance (Text-Enhance) is cross-browser adware and an advertising platform that uses multiple programs, browser extensions, and files to attach to internet browsers and gather personal data without user consent. Text Enhance is used by multiple third-parties in order to monetize freeware and other programs. This adware serves pop-up and targeted advertisements it feels users are most likely to click on across Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer based off of the information it gathers.

What is Text Enhance?

Text Enhance (Text-Enhance) is cross-browser adware and an advertising platform that uses multiple programs, browser extensions, and files to attach to internet browsers and gather personal data without user consent. Text Enhance is used by multiple third-parties in order to monetize freeware and other programs. This adware serves pop-up and targeted advertisements it feels users are most likely to click on across Chrome, Firefox, and Internet Explorer based off of the information it gathers.

Text Enhance Removal

Victims of Text Enhance adware usually notice they are infected with this adware when the content found on random webpages have links that display spam advertisements once they are hovered over. These types of advertisements are called in-text advertisements. *Hovering over the words racing teams opens up a small window showing a spam advertisement relative to racing teams (image).

Video example of a Text Enhance infection

Text Enhance adware is usually contracted without user knowledge alongside free downloadable content from a variety of locations on the web. Free downloadable content includes freeware, shareware, torrents, email attachments, and more.

Users who wish to install freeware may be given a “custom installation” option to accept or decline an offer to install Text Enhance adware and similar products during the installation; However, the user request to decline the adware from installing can be ignored by the program or presented in a confusing manner.

In some cases, Text Enhance and other unwanted programs are deceptively promoted through questionable advertisements. These advertisements may be dishonest, misleading, and cause the program to automatically download and install once clicked on.

I had to disable few applications on Mozzilla one with Codec and something with FLash Shockwave and then run again the CC cleaner for Cache and cookies , but it worked!

Thanks a bunch!

Clearing cookies worked for Firefox.
For Chrome, nothing worked, until I disabled each extension one at a time and tested. Turned out to be MapQuest Button. Disabled and removed, every web page is clean now.

Thanks! This really helped as i would always get annoying hyper link kind of things popping up all over the place!

Thank you so much for this very valuable information! Removing ad text links from Chrome worked. You make lots of people very happy. Peace.

Thank you very much. I was having trouble finding the malware because it had a different name than any of the names listed above, even though its description fit perfectly. The extention I had was called “Video Player” and I was able to remove it eventually with your help.

Thank you so much for your detailed explanation. Apparently the spyware I had was called lucky leap rather than text enhance, but I managed to remove it with your help.

I found this on my computer today (1-14-13) and after removing the “SEND TO KINDLE” app from Amazon this went away. So anyone installing the SEND TO KINDLE app for Firefox be aware that Amazon installs this adware crap (text-enhance adware) without your knowledge. Nowhere is this addition prominently displayed in the download that this crap is installed along with the Amazon Firefox addon.

Does anybody have any details on who or what company is behind Text Enhance? Where are they based? What is their address? I haven’t been able to find much so far. Their Web site is extremely unhelpful — they clearly don’t want to be found. Let’s track these bastards down!

Seems to have worked. It was infecting Firefox only and I didn’t see any unusual extensions or addons. I deleted all cookies and ran Malwarebytes. Added the two websites as exceptions in the cookie list. Restarted Firefox. So far so good.

This one is even more invasive than before, because it will randomly open a new tab in your browser, and FORCE you to view, even if you’re using another program. The original url always starts with ssl.privacysafeguard (I can’t remember the rest), but quickly changes to a random spam website (The most common of which seems to be adultfriendfinder.).

This is a damn annoying bit of adware/malware……my particular version came under the name “CouponDropDown”, but as someone commented below, I simply removed the “CouponDropDown” program in Add/Remove Programs and it remove the Firefox/Chrome extensions automatically!

Thanks for the helpful article. I found “I want that” on my mom’s computer’s list of installed programs so I uninstalled it and it automatically deleted the extension and everything to do with Text Enhance, it was way easier than doing it all manually.

Just removed my Text Enhance malware – you can add to the list of possible names ‘Deals Plugin’. One has to wonder why the anti-virus software I spent good money on didn’t pick it up…..I have a feeling my PC got infected after I purchased a cheap mouse when my normal one broke. Thanks for the removal procedure, was of great assistance.

Hi Sean, I found VideoFileDownload in my extensions, AND in my installed programs under VideoFileDownload. I uninstalled both.. Nasty, annoying bugger. Why isn’t Panda antivirus detecting this? i searched their blog for discussions about it, and nothing found.

Could anybody lend a hand…? Near the end where it says “Delete registries” and provides a list of things.

When it says, for example, ” “CertificateRevocation” = ’0′ ” on the list — what is the 0 referring to?

I’m uncertain of whether I should delete these files no matter what or only if they’re displaying a certain value… any help would be greatly appreciated!

Dislike It! extension from Facebook also includes TextEnhance. Not sure if this was mentioned by anyone else, but I just did a test extension-by-extension, and Dislike was it.

this site works! good info i have Google chrome i found through the help of this site it hiding in the ext. as i want this got it gone thanks so much!!!!

this works thanks text enhance is gone it was hiding in the google chrome ext. part under i want this… i didnt want it LOL thanks to u its gone now

In chrome all i had to do is remove ‘Codec-v’ and text enhance was gone. Dealply is a service i wouldnt want to blame because its an alright service and i’ve had dealply long before text enhance raped everyone’s browser. I got text enhance after installing the NCH Software suite which is freeware. All you really have to do is remove the extensions that don’t have icons one after the other because they are never important unless they actually helped you out in an obvious way.

I’m glad to hear you got rid of Text Enhance.
Dealply is bundled with a plethora of different malware infections. I would defiantly blame Dealply for any adware/hijacker type symptoms. I have written about so many coexisting malware apps that are bundled with Dealply and other ware distributed as freeware. Unfortunately this is how many freeware providers generate revenue.

I almost never leave a comment – but this page is just too good/helpful! 🙂 For the record, I was using Firefox, and it was ‘disguised’ under the Extension “I Want This”, which was (even more helpfully) on your list of possible names. Great work, guys! You have a new, interested, indebted, unique visitor…!

Thanks for the help in this article (and by the way the extension Video File Download is another name for text enhance on Chrome’s extension page).

hey, is there a way for web developers to block this on their site even though a client may have it accidentally installed?? I was hit with this, but it also concerns me if other people end up redirected.

Not that I’m aware of. Keep in mind if you are infected with Text Enhance, then only you are. Your website has not been injected by Text Enhance.
Text Enhance does not redirect, if your browser is redirecting you, then you are infected with something else alongside Text Enhance (if you also see Text Enhance ads).

If you are having redirection issues I have written this post about something called MyStart. It will have similar solutions to remove a redirection virus and repair hijacked settings.

I came here to check what Text Enhance was because some people at work had it. But I just wanted to say I love the simple design of this website. It reminds me of a virtual text book.

Mine was hidden inside the “facebook dislike button” extension. I removed this and the advertisment was gone.

Thank you! Worked perfectly :). Mine was called ‘Click 2 Save’, once I deleted it all the random highlights were gone, so that’s a new name for the list.

I’m assuming you have gone through all the extensions for each internet browser installed on your computer. if not please do so.

There are many other names for extensions associated with Text Enhance which are detailed above (or here:

Also, if you do not want to disable Text Enhance we have detailed other removal options:

Delete Directory Files:

Delete Registry Entries:

Anti Malware:

I got rid of it!!!! I figured out where I got it. I added a plug in for Facebook to get rid of time line. It worked but it had text enhance hidden inside. I simply deleted that plugin and now it is gone.

This is such an informative article and very clearly written.
Spams are the most common issue that is troubling the network users. It not only reduces the bandwidth but also like viruses, spread rapidly and infectious.

at least on my my machine, I learned that this rotten piece $hit text enhance disguised itself as Vid Saver extension in chrome and the same Vid saver add-on in Firefox. Its possible that on your machine it may be disguising itself using another extension/plugin.

Remove these extensions/plugins.

same here, it disguised itself as Vid saver on chrome. The irony is I saw text enhance advertise three times whilst reading this article :S

Thank you for your help! In my case, it came in the form of a Java update. I disabled it and viola- problem fixed!

Text Enhance showed up for me today in IE9 under Win7 64bit Home Premium. I checked the programs I’ve installed in the last week and it was just Toad for MySQL and VMWare Player – both of which have good pedigrees.

Also there was nothing unexpected in the “Add-ons” (show all add-ons). However, disabling Flash did prevent it from working, but I don’t consider that a valid workaround because some of the sites I use require Flash.

The fact that Flash is facilitating Text Enhance’s operation put me onto a workaround which was to look at the Flash Global Storage Settings which you get to via this webpage:

And then uncheck the box which says “Allow third-party Flash content to store data on your computer”

That seems to have prevented Text Enhance from operating on two machines I’ve looked at, without having to disable Flash entirely. I don’t know if there’s still something installed on my machine – neither AVG or AdAware picked it up at any point in a full scan.

I FOUND IT! it’s a codec file…i disabled it and tested it in google then just deleted it. Had to do it for ie as well, but YAY! it’s gone :)…i hope

What an awesome site for help!!! I could understand the instructions even tho i’m not techie…THANKS BUNCHES!

So… I don’t have any of those plug ins- except for Shockwave, which updated yesterday, which, coincidentally, is when I noticed this hideous Text Enhance. I’ve searched my files, add ons, plug ins and the only thing that it could be is Shockwave. So, if I can’t turn off Shockwave, what are my options? Thanks for any advice!

Yeah this page helped me.. Thanks alot.. I had an extension on my chrome as Vid-Saver which I removed and now everything is fine.. Thanks again..

I find out the way that we can remove text-enhance and its work very well
– go to C: and wirte in searching field theBflix
– close all Internet browsers
AND then will show for you many theBflix files in many places of C: station
– remove all these files
good luck
– remove all

thank you for this information. had this for the last week or so and was getting pretty fucking annoyed.

JESUS CHRIST thank you so much, I could murder someone over this fucking Text Enhance thing. I found it in my add-ons and suddenly ON MY DESKTOP as Codec-V. Thanks for all the info!

Only noticed this ‘text-enhance’ last few days and just thought it was a new thing on some sites until realised it was happening on every site I visited. Thanks to this page I have sorted it quickly – did the Tools > Manage Add ons for IE as above and found it as ‘I Want This’ (installed a week ago, somehow). Disabled it. Then went to Add/Remove programs where it was also sitting so have deleted it from there. Wanted to close down all IE browser windows to finish the uninstall so reckoned that was a good sign. Now all seems ok 🙂
I use lots of different browsers so be warned it may not just be a browser issue….

Thank you so much. I had no idea how this thing got onto my computer in the first place and I had no idea how to get it off. It was under another name! I was so mad. I think it’s finally gone.

Thanks to Neil, I think I found it in Firefox in Shockwave Not seeing the TE links, but unfortunately, no Shockwave applications show up now…

I’ve tried to uninstall the program (I’m on Windows 7 with IE9) but can’t locate it in the list of software to uninstall. Where can I locate it?

Yeeeeeeahh Buddy!!! Thank you so much for this! I found another possible name from TE in my extensions, sent it to you for investigation. Thought I was going crazy seeing it everywhere! Posted this article’s link on my blog.

Great post!

Finally figured my own text enhance problem, which seems to be different than everyone here. You can add “notepad++” to your list of infected software. It was hiding in shockwave flash like others. Uninstalling “notepad++” in the control panel fixed my own text enhance nightmare. This is one hour i want back hah! Anyway add Notepad++ to your list above and save people some time.

i use google chrome and have not found any of the listed extensions installed on the extensions page or in my add/delete programs in control panel….this is really getting on my nerves…any ideas?

Start with the extensions and just go down the line disabling one by one until you find it. I had two that weren’t on the list.

no,no. re: firefox —– switching off the ‘shockwave flash’ plugin did get rid of the TE sh*t, but also stopped my flashplayer working
SO i switched to the ‘extentions’ tab in my add-ons manager, and removed and extension called ‘bflix 5.0’
thats worked so far…but i aint jumping for joy yet. give it a day or two with no infection 1st……

i run firefox on vista
deleteted cookies
disabled the ‘shockwave flash 11.2 etc’ add on in the manager
uninstalled ‘bfix’ prog via me control panel
havent tried explorer yet,so will c, but worked for firefox
not very encouraging in FFox manager that the thing can still be seen(altho disabled) would be nice to just strait delete it imediately maybe FFox 12.1 will sort that out?

A very big thank you to this english guy for showing how to get rid of it my mum said she could kiss you and that your a big help..
Look for either BFLIX 5.0 OR Bflix and uninstall this this is also caused by torrent downloads and the torrent upload toolbar… Thank you once again to the english guy… HOPE THIS HELPS EVERYBODY
