MYWOT (mywot.com), a small company from Finland headed by controversial co-founder Sami Tolvanen has recently been caught in another scam according to hundreds of anonymous reports. This time the MYWOT scam is minuscule (no one is suing MYWOT again) but has lead to public statements from Facebook concerning the truth about poorly designed MYWOT reputation system.
MYWOT was caught purchasing Facebook likes, similar to when they were caught purchasing Twitter followers (image below) from two separate online suppliers. 24% of Web of Trust’s Facebook likes have been removed by Facebook, and more are suspected to shed from MYWOT.COM’s fake Facebook like total.
Facebook also has since removed MYWOT as a partner due to unscrupulous activities found to be “not trustworthy” by Facebook executives. Facebook executives further state:
“The decision to cancel our relationship with MYWOT is unfortunate, however, Facebook has found evidence of manipulation of companies on the MYWOT system. Facebook acknowledges that MYWOT has a open forum rated by internet peers, however the ranking system has substantial flaws.”
Facebook executive Matt Cohler also submits that “Facebook will be more careful in the future in regards to partnering with companies such as MYWOT.”
The fall from Grace
MYWOT has been falling in popularity over the past 12 months as more-and-more WOT users realize that the MYWOT.com rating system is systematically flawed.
Furthermore to speculate on issues concerning WOT, they allow cyber criminals to freely manipulate their ranking system, which can harm many WOT users who suspect the service as being trustworthy.
Cyber criminals and unethical individuals (spammers, scammers) can freely create multiple fake WOT accounts using different IP address. They can then start ranking random sites on the MYWOT website – The more websites the fake accounts rank, the more leverage the fake accounts will have. Criminals and spammers then use these accounts to boost malicious websites, downvote secure websites, spread spam, and over all potentially harm anyone using MYWOT.

It should be noted that after publishing this article our MYWOT score went from the 90′s to 50′s in a heartbeat, and became filled with slanderous and untrue comments from long-time MYWOT members. In fact, they published images of mine and my neighbors home and our home addresses, along with private information in regards to a minor (neighbor’s son). We had contacted the FBI and images were promptly removed as it was apparent the images were meant to promote bodily harm, possibly death.
*This article has nothing to do with the fact that MYWOT tarnished our reputation after this article was published. One of their users actually displayed an image of us in green: http://img689.imageshack.us/img689/768/botcrawl0com1wot.png. To say otherwise is to conclude the suspicious behavior on their part. In fact, they even claimed that botcrawl.com was on the HP Hosts blacklists powered by Malwarebytes even though we were not. Here is the video:
